Romantic Killer - A fan girl's ultimate comfort anime

I don't consider myself an ultimate anime fan, but once in a while, when I stumble upon a good one, I immediately become obsessed with it. Romantic Killer is by far the best anime I've watched. Given the animation style and the plot, it is definitely the best modern romance anime.

Romantic Killer is originally a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Wataru Momose, which was adapted into an original net animation & was released on Netflix in October of 2022. The series revolves around the main character Anzu Hoshino, a high school girl with zero interest in romance, and a wizard named Riri who's trying to drag her into a series of real-life events that resemble typical rom-com dating games & movies.

Anzu's character feels so relatable to me personally. She's a no-nonsense, independent, blunt girl living her best life with her 3 obsessions; video games, chocolate & cats. The only kind of boys she's interested in are her favorite video game characters which sums up my entire existence. As a girl who loves music, sweets, K-drama, K-pop, & having a non-existent love life other than being obsessed with fictional characters, Anzu's entire character felt like someone spied on me to make her😂

And why is it named 'Romantic Killer'? Well, Riri the mischievous wizard offers her a chance to be surrounded by 'Ikemen' aka cool, handsome guys & tells her that all she needs to do is fall in love with one of them. Anzu seems somewhat appealed by the idea at first, but it all goes to the trash can when Riri takes her 3 obsessions away, telling her that those obsessions are the reason why she has no love life, & he's going to make them disappear until she falls in love with a guy. This makes Anzu furious, and she's determined to avoid all the romantic setups Riri has up in his sleeve planned for her, killing the romance. (If someone asked me to trade my hobbies in exchange for some boys, I'd totally flip off too!)

Then we get introduced to the 'Ikemen', which resembles the typical romantic interests in every rom-com ever. Kazuki Tsukasa is the cold & reserved guy who's annoyed by the popularity he has gained among girls & avoids them at all costs. Then we get Hayami Junta, Anzu's childhood best friend who's secretly in love with her. Finally, the rich & arrogant guy Hijiri Cogenai who tries to flex his riches to Anzu. The story goes as Anzu tries to save herself from Riri's hilarious romantic setups and unexpectedly creates friendly emotional bonds with all the guys. My favorite scenes are Anzu's over-the-top facial expressions whenever she realizes she has fallen into Riri's traps😂

At first, I thought this was going to be a typical romance anime in which all the guys fall for the quirky heroin & her being oblivious to it, but I realized it's actually mocking that exact stereotype. Anzu being aware of what's happening around her & pretending to be dumb is what makes Romantic Killer so fun to watch.

The reason why I love this anime so much is, that it highlights the importance of friendship, loyalty & understanding human emotions on a deeper level. It also slightly takes the path of a psychological thriller in the end. So, it's definitely more than a silly little rom-com. Every single character plays a significant role in conveying the end message of the story.

Sadly, this anime doesn't have a second season though it definitely deserves a one as it ended with a little cliffhanger. It's been 2 years since I first watched it, but I still find myself re-watching it all the time. That's how hooked I am with this story. If you're also a rom-com enthusiast, don't forget to give this a try!
