Finding a personal style
1. Trends
Trying to follow various clothing trends was one of the biggest mistakes I made as a middle schooler. Most of those trends didn't suit my body type or skin color. Following trends didn't make me look like a stylish person, instead, they made my appearance bad & made me insecure. Instead of buying the trendiest piece on the market, it's important to invest in timeless pieces that match you, & that can be worn for a long time.
2. Skin tone
I have natural tan skin, so bright colors are my worst enemy. Up until recently, I had a couple of bright orange & red outfits. I had to replace them, even if they were still in good condition. I figured out that warm & earthy tones like Burgundy, Chocolate Brown, Black, Charcoal Grey, Navy Blue & Emerald Green fit me the most.
3. Body type
I always tend to buy & wear baggy jeans & T-shirts since they're very comfortable. But since I have a slim figure, I'm trying to switch to clothes that complement my body type. Flashy & revealing clothing doesn't suit me much. Simple & elegant is mostly my type.
4. Accessories
This is something I've yet to figure out. According to all the fashion guides I've seen, gold accessories should suit me the most, since I have a warm undertone. But silver works with me the most, & wearing gold makes me uncomfortable unless there's a special occasion. Simple patterns & designs fit me the most. I don't use accessories for my hair since it's curly, and I'm going through a different kind of struggle daily just to wear a decent-looking ponytail😅
5. Make-up
This is the category I'm least confident of. I'm not a make-up person even though I want to be. I struggle with multiple skin issues as well as acne, so make-up is always a big nightmare for me. Whenever I get occasions where I HAVE to wear make-up, I try to manage with eyeliner & some lip gloss. I have still so much to learn about it, & so far, the only thing I know is nude colors like peach suit my lips the most.
I haven't been doing the greatest job when it comes to my personal style, but I've managed to make some progress over the years. One of my goals this year is to actually invest myself more in this. The most important thing I've realized is that, instead of buying so many clothes, we should buy a couple pieces that we can mix & match with. And you don't need to spend on expensive & luxury brands to be fashionable. You just need to figure out what matches you the most, what makes you feel the most authentic & comfortable.
